Days of Christmas Past
My holiday trip was crazy indeed. For now I’m just going to talk about the trip down.
In an attempt to be thrifty Peaches and I decided to drive from Chicago to Longview, Texas. It should have been a pretty easy drive, about 12 hours. Most people seem to be concerned about a 12 hour drive, but after quite a few drives from Savannah, Georgia to Texas by myself under my belt I wasn’t sweating a 12 hour drive with my wife.
The weather however was another concern of mine. Chicago is fiercely protective about their roads and I have only seen ice on the smallest of the side streets here. Further down the line I thought we might hit ice and snow. When southern Illinois had icy interstate I wasn’t surprised. After a two hour set back, the roads cleared up. I actually made the comment that we were out of the woods, and a few hours of clear driving followed.
Peaches got some sort of stomach virus and began throwing up. She spend the rest of the trip alternating between heaving and scouring the car for suitable containers for her growing collection of her sick.
I felt terrible for her, but I was unable to offer little comfort, because about the same time ice started showing up on the road again, this time in Arkansas. I have terrible night vision so I had my eyes glued to the road trying to spot treacherous patches of ice in an effort to keep us from careening off the road. Because of the ice, we slowed to a crawl. My hopes were to drive in the neighborhood of 70 mph, and watching the needle drop to 20mph made my mind spin with estimates of when we would arrive at our destination.
After a few hours of Peaches throwing up and no sign of the ice letting up anytime soon we were ready to concede defeat. We began our search for a place to stay for the night. After finding 8 or 9 motels with out vacancy we gave up hope of finding any place with a room. Just before we got to Little Rock traffic slid to a halt. We spent about an hour an a half there but it was never clear why. I managed to sneak in 20 minutes of sleep.
We eventually pulled in to Longview at 10 am and we had left at 11:30 am the previous day. It was stinky while it was going on but now we have an interesting story. I’ll post later about what we did in Texas what I picked up for Christmas.
